Genre

My genre is a music video based on a local rock band as I use their music.

The most used and obvious conventions of your average rock video is that they usually both use narrative and performance, the blend of these two combined seems to be the focus of rock videos. The narrative tends to show a romance between the lead singer and a girl or vice versa or two of the same genres, this can be shown through both action based shots or even some form of current affair. On the other hand capturing a bands or artists performance tends to be an important trademark as it shows the audience who is behind the music it creates a brand and a promotion for the band.
I will be incorporating the bands branding within the video due to the fact it is their music so they do need promotion, also it is a major convention uses in most rock videos we say today.

Mise en scene is a key factor when it comes to the video as props, location and costume and even actors have to fit with the narrative and also the genre of the music, a colour always seems to be black, black is used in rock videos because it has always been associated to rock music.

Although, my video will only use some of these conventions as I will use more colours than just black, and their will be no storyline or narrative as love will not be seen within the video.

Chosen Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

• a digipak for the album’s release;

• a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

Initial Ideas

My initial idea was to cut between a live recording of a band and footage of the BBC changing over the years between the 70’s to now. But, having received feedback that I wouldn’t get the best marks possible due to copyright I realised my initial idea was too impossible to even do simply because of copyright and the exam board would not allow it never mind the BBC. With another idea in place which was to use projectors for an acoustic song, a dramatic change from the rock music I was going to originally use. The ambient music of acoustic genre would fit perfectly to my new idea. My new idea is to project lyrics onto a wall and the person who would be miming the words, whilst the background would change colours demanding on the pace of the song. But, yet another dilemma occurred again I would not fulfil my potential on the exam board due to the lack of camera angles and camera movements. I’d be lacking the key ingredients to do well, I would dramatically lose marks.

My new and final idea is to stick to my traditional idea and layout of cutting between fast paced band and vintage videos. The band would be filmed in black and white and would include loads of camera movements including tracking and crane and close ups, whilst the start would include long shots and establishing shots. My new idea fits in with the music of my choice which is now rock, and will hit all the camera angles and movements I need to succeed.
Initial idea Media music video.

The opening 10 seconds of the video will be an 80’s BBC show with a presenter talking, he gets quickly cut my sustain feedback generated from a guitar to the picture of the BBC test screen.

This would then go to an image of a band playing live, fast and loud.

In which it is constantly flickering between bands playing live with lyrics running along the screen to a different presenter talking but it changes from 60’s to 2014 a generation at a time.

The end of the video will see the band play in reverse rewinding everything and will go back to the first original presenter.

Camera shots and angles

This from Darlia, shows a man with no instrument pointing towards the camera, in my video there will be a male actor however the camera will be facing down upon him, with lyrics written near him, in an all black shoot.

Midshot of an object will be used within my music video to, this one is taking from Darlia Napalm Video. I'm also using a studio, all white background, to record my objects.
Camera Shots- Point of view, extreme close up, close up, long shot, close up, mid-shot, establishing shot (opening scene), and low angle is looking up. High angle is looking down on something. Over the shoulder shot. Two shot-when two people are in the shot (what all these angles symbolises).

Camera movements- Arc when the camera goes around the character. Tracking shot follows an object or character, Track (back and forwards like zoom), crab (side to side moves left to right) pan is a shift movement from right to left). Crane goes up and down.
Possible meanings:

Point of view is there to show the point of the character within the scene to give the audience a realistic feel to their viewing experience. To see the scene through personas eyes can create/show an array of emotions.
Close up helps establish an emotional reaction on a characters face to show the audience what he or she is feeling, another reason for close especially when used on objects is to create suspense or show importance to that specific object.

Establishing shot does exactly what it says, it sets out the scene, and it introduces the audience to the scene and establishes characters and place.

High Angle looks down upon a character to show that the character is not important where as if a character is seen looking down upon the other character it shows superior. On the other hand, if the camera is a low angle this implies that they are feeling threatened by a superior character or they feel small compared to the world.

Two shot is there to serve the purpose of conversation to show the audience characters and who they are talking to.

  Possible meanings:
Arc is used for the audience to gain a feel of the character to understand them better, how they dress, their height, their body mass; it is like the camera is examining the characters world.
Tracking shot is used to keep up with the pace of the scene in order to show pace through a scene tracking an object or a character shows importance. The audience instantly knows the watch out for either character or object the camera has tracked.
Crane is usually used when a tall building or a character is seen within a scene the camera will make a movement of up and down to show the audience the full length of something within that scene.
Pan is used to keep up with a moving object or person such as a fast car.
